Diehl Defence supplies high-tech equipment for defence. With the development and production of guided missiles and ammunition for the army, air force and navy, the company is one of the technology leaders in the global market.
Initial situation and challenge
Diehl Defence conducted a needs analysis of the search options and tools used for the current material search at the end of 2020 based on several workshops. The query focused on employees in the areas of development, design and component management. Typical problems in the departments were validated through an ACTUAL analysis, for example, poor data quality, duplicates, long and time-consuming searches, redundant and incorrect information in the systems (ERP and PDM/PLM system), no search hits and thus unnecessary new compiling. Based on these challenges, optimization potentials were identified and defined.
The goal should be to reduce waste in material procurement due to long search times, part variations, laborious processes and poor information flow.
Within one year, Diehl Defence improved their degree of standardization and data quality at three locations (Überlingen, Rötenbach, Ingelfingen, Germany) through data cleansing with the support of experts from D&TS GmbH.
The introduction of the international data standard ECLASS increased transparency in the supply chain and facilitated the digital exchange of information within the company and with external partners.
The implementation of ClassCOCKPIT SAP was Diehl Defence’s first step towards digital process automation. The goal is to minimize human error and increase efficiency through simplified, rule-based processes. The optimized parts management system speeds up material procurement at Diehl Defence through improved search functions and prevents unnecessary recreation and redesigns, which increases efficiency.
